High above the Indian Ocean, on the headland of Konesar Malai, Thirukoneswaram has long held a sacred place in the heart of Trincomalee.
Revered as one of Sri Lanka’s Pancha Ishwarams — the five sacred abodes of Shiva — the kovil carries a living tradition of worship, Dravidian artistry, and Tamil cultural heritage.
Its story holds both loss and renewal: a historic complex damaged during seventeenth-century colonial attacks, and a sacred place whose traditions continue today.
In devotional tradition, legends speak of Ravana worshipping Shiva on this headland. These stories form part of its sacred heritage.
